Education is the key that unlocks the potential opportunity Oregon’s next generation and we are failing them. Monte will fight to get real dollars into the classrooms, fight for increased opportunities for students, and fight to reduce the cannibalism of schools budgets by the PERS liability. Without real change in Salem our public education system will continue to flounder and our children will suffer the consequences.
During Monte’s tenure on the Hillsboro School Board the graduation rate improved by 6%, we need his expertise in Salem where he can help generate similar results statewide. Monte spearheaded the funding initiative to get STEAM coaches in all our local schools and restored a third of the cuts to Hillsboro’s art, drama, leadership, band and sports programs. Real experience, real results.
Traffic congestion is choking our economic growth and ruining our quality of life, not to mention the pollution created by all the cars and trucks idling for hours. We all hate wasting time sitting in traffic and know that something must be done to fix it. Investing in new roads, bridges and transit is absolutely necessary to maintain Washington County as the economic engine of our state. Monte will work to insure the right investments in the right projects to fix this problem. Doing nothing is not an option, businesses, large and small, in our community depend on a healthy transportation system and Washington county families deserve an improved quality of life.
Jobs and the Economy
Oregon’s economy is driven by the Washington County’s Silicon Forest. Great companies like Intel & Nike have served as anchor tenants in Washington County. Our legislators must work also to expand opportunities for new businesses to flourish here as well. The cumbersome bureaucratic red-tape that stifles innovation and creativity of Oregon’s entrepreneur class must be streamlined and simplified. Recognizing how the tax burden impacts Oregon’s small and family businesses, Monte will be a voice for common sense and oppose the special interests desire for more of your money.
Our veterans have served us. It is our turn to honor the promises made to them. In 2016 voters passed Ballot Measure 96, which provided dedicated funding for veteran’s services. To date, the one-party leadership in Salem has failed to fulfill these promises. Monte will make veterans funding a priority.
The massive $25B unfunded liability that is known as PERS is an albatross around our state’s fiscal neck. Understanding and addressing this challenge requires a legislator like Monte with real world experience both in his public service and private business and the guts to make the difficult choices. Without changing the current system, the retirement program will inevitably bankrupt our state and further rob our children of educational opportunities, negatively impact Oregon’s most vulnerable senior populations & force further reductions in public safety. Monte’s background as a certified public accountant and as a locally elected school board member uniquely prepares him to understand and fix this difficult challenge. Real Experience, real results.
